NEUTRON MULTIPLICATION AND DETECTOR COUNT RATES IN SUBCRITICAL EXPERIMENTS USING TRIPOLI-4® CODE H/F

TRIPOLI-4® is a general-purpose Monte-Carlo radiation transport code developed by the Service d'Études des Réacteurs et de Mathématiques Appliquées (SERMA) at CEA-Saclay. It uses continuous-energy nuclear data to simulate neutron, photon, electron and positron transport in fields like nuclear criticality safety, radiation protection and shielding, fission reactor physics, and nuclear instrumentation [1]. The verification and validation (V&V) assessments of TRIPOLI-4® are one of the fundamental processes to assume the accuracy and credibility of numerical studies for its nuclear engineering applications. Many computational and experimental benchmark cases are already established in the V&V database of TRIPOLI-4®. This internship contributes to this V&V database on its subcritical fields.

The purpose of this internship is to study the neutron multiplication in subcritical experiments, to perform the related V&V calculations of TRIPOLI-4®, and eventually to reinforce the capacities of the code for calculations of different parameters of subcritical measurements. The basic parameters to study are the total multiplication (MT) and the leakage multiplication (ML) in different subcritical experiments. The related parameters including the effective multiplication factor (Keff), the prompt neutron multiplication factor (Kp), the delayed neutron fraction (beta_eff), the Rossi alpha (α_Rossi), the singles count rates (R1), and the doubles count rates (R2) are also interesting to investigate [2]. Sensitivity study on subcritical neutron multiplication is necessary for neutron source distribution in fissile space. The energy spectrum of neutron source is also a subject to study. Calculations using different nuclear data libraries for different reflectors (material and thickness) are required.
