General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Division description

By conducting research in the fields of physics, chemistry and life sciences, the Fundamental Research Division (DRF) contributes to the advancement of knowledge and technological developments at the highest level worldwide. It contributes to the development of solutions that meet the challenges facing our society, in the service of all the CEA's missions. The DRF employs over 6,000 people in 10 institutes. Collaboration with other research organizations and universities, in particular through joint research units, is central to the DRF.

Description de l'unité

The Institute for Integrative Biology of the Cell (I2BC) (https://www.i2bc.paris-saclay.fr/) is a joint research unit (UMR 9198), one of the 4 research entities of DRF's Frédéric Joliot Institute of Life Sciences (JOLIOT). JOLIOT brings together the life sciences teams on the Paris-Saclay campus, attached to the CEA Paris-Saclay/Saclay center. The I2BC gathers 650 staff from CEA, CNRS and Université Paris-Saclay. Its aim is to characterize the integrative functioning of the cell and, in particular, to understand the molecular processes that govern the cell's organization and overall physiology, as well as its interactions with the environment. The I2BC teams have access to technological platforms offering high-level services in genomics, biophysics, structural biology, proteomics, imaging and integrative bioinformatics.

Job description

Teams in the I2BC Microbiology Department are interested in microorganisms both to answer fundamental questions about their biology and to use them in applications covering the fields of health, the environment and energy. Several of these teams focus on the biotechnological production of high value-added compounds using synthetic biology approaches, as is the case of the " Biology and Biotechnology of Cyanobacteria" team, headed by Franck Chauvat, which has internationally recognized expertise in cyanobacteria.

Within the I2BC Microbiology Department, you will be responsible for a new research team focusing on the metabolism and bioengineering of cyanobacteria.

The "cyanobacteria" model is of major interest for the sustainable bio-production of carbonaceous molecules of interest, as cyanobacteria have remarkable photosynthetic activity, enabling them to produce carbonaceous molecules from the capture of atmospheric CO2, water and solar energy. The metabolic reprogramming of cyanobacteria makes it possible to redirect fixed carbon towards the biosynthesis of carbonaceous molecules of interest in the fields of energy and the environment (terpenes, lipids, H2, alcohols, biodegradable bioplastics) and health (antibiotics, antioxidants, vitamins).

Your mission will be to lead a research team whose aim is to:

- increase our knowledge of cyanobacterial metabolism,

- document the biodiversity of cyanobacteria,

- develop and apply synthetic biology approaches for cyanobacterial bioengineering,

- reprogram cyanobacteria for the bio-production of molecules of interest,

- create/optimize cyanobacterial frames.

You will also be responsible for promoting the visibility of this I2BC theme, contributing to the I2BC's scientific strategy, in particular to the "Bio-inspired engineering for energy, health and the environment" axis, and participating in specific CEA programs such as the one dedicated to the circular carbon economy.
